The Healthy DJ

By Bobby Riley, “DJ Mastermind”

A few years ago, I stumbled upon, a DJ that was making a lot of noise about charging more, and that DJs name is Mark Ferrell. The idea of making a living from something I love never occurred to me. I mean clubs only pay so much for talent, and there is everyone else out there waiting to take my place. His message along with Peter Merry’s is simple “Get paid what your worth” and it was such a radical idea that even today there are traditionalist Djs who not only shun and ridicule the message but only make about 1/4 of what their talent is actually worth. It’s a RADICAL idea. Something that changed the way a lot of DJs do business.

Today, I’m going to present you with another, The Healthy DJ.

What do I mean by that? I mean the DJ who can load their vehicle, Drive to the venue, Load in, Do a 4-6 hour show, Load out , Drive home and still have enough energy to take his wife dancing that night. I’m talking about the DJ who can hit the dance floor with his guest all night long and not get winded.

Is that you? If it is Congratulations! If it’s not then we need to talk, you see we don’t get in the shape we are in overnight. It takes years of practice, Years of not eating right, years of sitting on our tailbones. Guess what. it not going to go away over night! There is no miracle drug that will help us get back the youthful girlish figure we once had. Just like our business it take time and effort, and guess what, I’m right there on this journey with you.

If this new year has made you decide that you need a new outlook on life, then I’m going to help you get past all the BS, lose weight , get thin scams that are out there. the goal is not to “lose weight” even thought that is a benefit, The goal is to get healthy, and to do that we have to take it one step at a time.

To use a great tag line from Randy Bartlett’s 1% solution series “Small Changes Big Results”

Small change #1 – changing the way we think

If you weigh a lot more than your ideal weight, you might feel like a new brand new DJ trying to hold his own against Peter Merry.

That journey to the ‘finish line’ feels impossibly far away, the odds against you seem enormous, and your chance of success nonexistent.

That mentality will get you nowhere.

Don’t think about how big the gap is between where you are now and where you want to be.  Instead, concentrate on putting one foot in front of the other, starting the next step in your process, and moving a little bit closer towards that goal.

You need to change how you look at each day. Don’t say “holy crap I have 100 pounds to lose, I’m screwed!”  Instead, say “This is the new me, and I’m going to make one change this week.  And then next week I will make another change.”  And so on…

Small Change #2 – Change your diet

Everything that I have learned about fitness has comes back to one thing the 80/20 ratio. 80% of your fitness is what you put into your mouth. The old adage you are what you eat is defiantly true. So today make your first change.

Example: Every morning , the first thing I would do is drink a coke, that was my morning rush, my caffeine, and the first of as many as 8 to 10 cokes I would have that day, hell most of the time I don’t think I took a shower before I had that first coke . So guess what my first change was. I drank a glass of orange juice instead. Then instead of having my usual coke during the day I went to Wal-Mart and bought a gallon of water, that sits on my desk with my name on it… after 3 weeks I don’t drink soda’s and guess what, I drink a full gallon of water a day and don’t even think about it. I get thirsty I grab my water.

So lets start there. start making small changes for you and yourself, and just so you know I’m not full of BS let me give you some of my stats. I am 44 years old, starting weight 280 lbs, current weight 270 lbs, One mile time 17:44, my first goal is to beat my one mile time by Friday. My second goal is to do 40 situps, 20 crunches, 20 leg raises and one 30 second plank by friday. My long term goal: to look like this:

So if you want to join me, I have setup a new face book group for all of my friends and fellow DJ to help each other on this long road to discovery. https://www.facebook.com/groups/871550212895172/

Till then Live Laugh and Learn.
