Open Up Your Gift Box

by Ray Martinez

I am very honored and humbled to be given a forum to offer words of motivation, inspiration, and encouragement. There are many times that I see articles in a newspaper or magazine, or see something on television that inspires me to write and pass those thoughts on to you, my reading audience.

I was flipping through channels on TV this past weekend, and stumbled upon the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) where there was a show on called Oprah’s Life Class.

The short segment I had a chance to see was about thinking outside the box, and how many people are trapped in a world of fear without knowing how to get out.

There were four women who were asked to face those fears without knowing where they were going. They all were taken to a skydiving facility to jump out of a plane. By the way, all four women were afraid of heights. They got into the plane and did tandem skydiving. In the end, not only did they face their fears, they conquered them. The women said that jumping out of that plane helped them overcome all fears that held them back previously. So what does that have to do with being a DJ/Entertainer? More than you will know.

Poise and Coolness

As I have traveled around the country to speak to fellow entertainers, I’ve learned that many are just starting out, or don’t have the self-assurance to be a better entertainer. Their musical knowledge may be outstanding, and their mixing skills may be impeccable, but as public speakers they lack the poise and coolness to be an excellent emcee. Just like the lady skydivers, they too must learn to face their fears. Remember, your mind is the most powerful tool in your body!

A Power of Example

Singer Susan Boyle was bullied most of her life, but she didn’t let the bullies hold her back. Susan knew she had a talent and went for it even though like so many other people, she struggled to pay her bills. Today she has a multi-million dollar recording career.

I had the privilege to mentor a young DJ named Will Curran of Arizona Pro DJs. He started out doing school dances at the age of 16, and through hard work, a vision to succeed, and a government grant, Will has turned his small DJ service into a company earning close to a quarter of a million dollars a year.

There is a verse in scripture that says, “Without a vision, people will perish.” Friends, like the Susan Boyles, and the Will Currans, I hope you will open up the “gift box” the lord gave you, and share your talent with the world as an entertainer. When we make people laugh and smile, and help take away their everyday problems away even for a few hours, we are honoring our gifts and the source from whom we received them.
