Luminair Wireless DMX control for iPhone® and iPod Touch®

Review by Stacy Zemon

The Luminair 2.0 software allows users to wirelessly control lighting fixtures, dimmers, consoles, and media servers all via a Wi-Fi connection.

Small enough to fit into your pocket, it works great for controlling color-mixable LED fixtures, studio lighting, moving lights, and any other DMX enabled equipment.

Tricked-Out Features

  • An eye-catching user interface and powerful touch-optimized controls that take you through every step of the application.
  • Wide-fader controls
  • Large trigger buttons
  • X/Y controls with accelerometer support
  • Easy touch-based channel assignment

The software offers an innovative way of assigning pictures and images as a visual reference for the designer’s cues. Users can use the device’s built-in camera, built-in photo library, or Luminair’s internal web server to assign images. A CoverFlow view makes it easy for users to browse and trigger cues in a completely visual manner.

Continuous Automated Show Playback

Luminair offers continuous automated show playback with Stacks, which is a cue-list playback system. These playback capabilities have been designed to make it very easy to put together shows for a wide variety of uses, in a really quick and familiar manner.

Cues are added to a stack, and each have their own individual hold and fade time. Users can work with multiple stacks, apply batch timing to individual stacks, and choose one of five modes for playing back cues.

This little device is big on features, and may qualify as one of the most energy efficient lighting consoles ever. It gives users up to 3.5 hours of battery playback (on 3G iPod touch), and offers extended times of over 36 hours with an external battery pack (tested with Just Mobile’s Gum Plus). Luminair will run indefinitely when plugged into a dock or other USB power source.

You can use Luminair as the ultimate remote focus tool, for advanced architectural lighting, or simply as the centerpiece of your DMX lighting rig.
