Want to keep your audience riveted with quiet attention as opposed to ignoring you and conversing with someone at their table?
Spicing up the bouquet toss, garter removal, love story or a mundane topic such as “the buffet line is now open,” could be the answer you have been looking for.
A tasteful, well-timed anecdote or witty one-liner can gain and keep peoples’ attention. You can also get an audience involved in the event by, for example, bringing your mic onto the dance floor for some impromptu singing.
A great MC keeps people actually interested in the facts through a combination of physical gestures and clear communication, which can often involve the use of humor to get a point across.
Even if you think that you are simply not a “funny” person, that doesn’t mean that you can’t use humor to beef up your act as an MC. The key is to find what works for you.

- Share information without being boring.
- Make what you have to say more memorable.
Humor helps to paint a picture in people’s minds. A well-constructed illustration can often explain a point more clearly than mere words. People remember a good laugh. A point made with humor will linger in their minds, and you will have effectively done your job.
I would be remiss if I didn’t point out that humor should always be used sparingly and with good taste. This means stay away from racy, self-deprecating or insulting remarks, and the use of foul language.
