A Mission and Vision that Matters

If you were asked, “What’s your company’s mission and vision” right now, what would you say?

Well, if you’re like most DJs, you’d freeze up and not know how to respond.

My theory is that a lot of the meaning behind a mission and vision are so “feelings-based” that it’s often hard to articulate them in the right words.

Your mission and vision will become much more clear as you think about your company’s reason for being, your goals, the image you want to project, and the clients you serve.

Naturally your primary goal is to make money, but clients and employees want to connect with your mobile entertainment business on a deeper level. They want to know their buying choices and work efforts are relevant to a higher goal. This motivates people and helps them form loyal connections.

What is a Mission Statement?

Your mission statement is a precise definition of what your organization does on a daily basis and what you want to accomplish. It should describe the business you’re in and provide a definition of why the organization exists. Try and keep this to one or two sentences in length. Some example mission statements:

Our mission: to inspire and nurture the human spirit – one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time.” (Starbucks)

The mission of Southwest Airlines is dedication to the highest quality of client Service delivered with a sense of warmth, friendliness, individual pride, and Company Spirit.” (Southwest Airlines)

My mission is:

To provide educational resources for DJs that support their professional growth and financial prosperity.”

Coca Cola’s vision statement is actually a multi-part credo:

People: Be a great place to work where people are inspired to be the best they can be.

Portfolio: Bring to the world a portfolio of quality beverage brands that anticipate and satisfy people’s desires and needs.

Partners: Nurture a winning network of clients and suppliers, together we create mutual, enduring value.

Planet: Be a responsible citizen that makes a difference by helping build and support sustainable communities.

Profit: Maximize long-term return to share owners while being mindful of our overall responsibilities.

Productivity: Be a highly effective, lean and fast-moving organization.

What is a Vision Statement?

To create a vision statement, ask yourself: “What is my ideal preferred future?” and be sure to:

  • Draw on the beliefs, mission, and environment of your DJ company.
  • Describe what you want to see in the future.
  • Be positive and inspiring.
  • Don’t assume the system will have the same framework as it does today.
  • Be open to dramatic modifications to current organization, methodology, teaching techniques, facilities, etc.

Articulating a mission and vision that matters create the framework and inspiration your DJ service needs to be and stay successful.
