Create Your Future Today

Your Future

By Julie Oshins, “Play It Forward”

Abraham Lincoln once said, “The best way to predict your future is to create it.” I happen to think old Abe was a pretty wise dude, and talk about persistence! He was consistently rejected in politics for like 30 years before he got elected as President! So, he knows a thing or two about creating the future!

The school of thought around it is that our future isn’t created by what we do tomorrow, but by our actions and thoughts today, NOW.

What you are thinking about now is creating your future life. You create your life with your thoughts. Because you are always thinking, you are always creating. What you think about or focus on the most is what will appear as your life.

See, we are always thinking anyway. We are constantly making choices, moment by moment. Will my wife be upset if I do this?

Should I do this event? Should I buy X piece of equipment? Or even simpler, Snooze or not to Snooze? Should I eat a salad or a pizza?

If we are always thinking and always choosing anyway, if our thoughts are just making it all up as we go along, why not choose or think about the things that we WANT, or that inspire us?

One of the best resources I recommend for creating your future is Your Best Year Yet by Jinny S. Ditzler: Ten Questions for Making the Next Twelve Months Your Most Successful Ever. It focuses on the key concerns and commitments we all have, no matter where in the world we live! Greater income, time for what matters, fulfilling relationships, a satisfying career, physical wellness, and spiritual abundance. I’ve been using this the last few years, and its super effective in evaluating where you’ve been, acknowledging what you have accomplished, and powerfully creating what’s next.

When I answered these questions, I realized one way I limit myself is by being disorganized, in my private life, and became aware of the amount of clutter I have in my home. Now to be clear, I’m not a hoarder! And my DJ business/professional life is on point, but it’s at the expense of my home life being scattered. A bunch of my friends felt that same way. So we are reading a book together and doing the “exercises” as a group. The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying-Up, by Marie Kondo. It’s about decluttering and organizing your life. The process starts with discarding things you don’t need, asking yourself what objects “spark joy”, and keeping only joyful things. Can you imagine only allowing joy in your life? I’m smiling just thinking about it! It makes it much easier to get rid of things, when I can honestly answer that whatever the item is, does indeed, NOT spark JOY! (We are donating our “ joyless” items to several charities, so double feel-good bonus on that one!)

Now I know this is a DJ site, and you may be asking what does this have to do with DJing? Well, you are a human being, who DJs for a living. And you have this lifetime, to make of it what you will.

What I have learned this past year, it’s that tomorrow is not guaranteed. So, I want us all to be empowered to cherry-pick what is in alignment with our lives and what isn’t. To consciously make choices that support us in being the most powerful, confident, expressed versions of ourselves.

Don’t stress over past mistakes, because there’s nothing you can do to change it. Focus on your present and create your future today!
